Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) typifies the art, science, and spiritual yearnings of the Italian Renaissance. During this vibrant transitional period, medieval Western Europe was reawakening to the knowledge and wisdom of the ancient world. This was transmitted to them through reexamining what had been preserved in the West, but even more dynamically, from Constantinople and the Byzantine Roman East, as well as through Islamic science, art, and literature. The result of this fusion was the Renaissance of the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries, which ushered in the modern Western world.

This podcast is a reading of selections from the instructional booklet prepared for the da Vinci exhibit at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose and at the Rosicrucian Cultural Center at the Toronto Lodge during 2006.

In 2002, on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Rosicrucian Park, the Board of Directors of the English Grand Lodge announced the plans for the Future of Rosicrucian Park in a special issue of the Rosicrucian Digest. Some of the goals seemed formidable, however they were so important that we decided to include them all.

Today, most of these goals, plus many more, have been achieved, thanks to the exceptional vision and commitment of our Board and the generosity of thousands of Rosicrucian members around North America and the Caribbean.

This podcast describes some of the extraordinary projects that we have all accomplished together.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the preservation and perpetuation of Rosicrucian Park. Your support has made all of this possible!

Sacred to the goddess Vesta, whose virtues had defined the sanctity, purity, and harmony of the ideal Roman family, the hearth provided warmth and light, and it was the place where nourishment was prepared. In so many ways, Rosicrucian Park has served the Rosicrucian Order and the San Jose community in these very capacities.

Recently Rosicrucian members and guests joined Grand Master Julie Scott and Frater Dennis William Hauck for the dedication of the Alchemy Exhibit at Rosicrucian Park. This exhibit presents an introduction to Alchemy, an important part of the Rosicrucian Tradition, and leads guests through the seven steps of the alchemical process. It also includes a reproduction of a medieval Alchemist’s Workshop, a copy of The Ripley Scroll, and a meditation chamber featuring the “Azoth of the Philosophers” image.

This reading of the article presents some of the text from the Alchemy Exhibit panels and includes the Azoth Meditation.

Rosicrucian Initiatic Journeys to Egypt

Rosicrucian initiatic journeys to Egypt began in 1929 with Imperator H. Spencer Lewis leading the first group. These extraordinary pilgrimages continue until today. Seventy-five Rosicrucians from throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe accompanied H. Spencer Lewis on that first initiatic journey. The principal destination was Egypt, however on the way to and from that mystic land, the travelers visited mystical sites in the Madeira Islands, the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Holy Land, and Europe. As this was in the days before regular transatlantic air service, the journey lasted seventy days. It concluded on the Spring Equinox.

This trip was especially tailored for Rosicrucians. As is the case today, the travelers were treated to unique experiences and unusual sites normally passed over by the casual tourist of the day. At every site, in every city, members learned about cultural and mystical aspects related to the site generally unknown to the ordinary traveler. Of course, the most special features of this trip were the unique initiations conducted by Imperator Lewis. This tradition continues today with Imperator Claudio Mazzucco conferring the initiatic rituals in Egypt.

The Rosicrucian Order’s scientific research into mystical and transpersonal experiences began with H. Spencer Lewis in the early 1900s. It continued with the establishment of the International Research Council (IRC) in 1934 with a very active team of experts in various related fields who researched and taught at Rose Croix University International (RCUI) at Rosicrucian Park.

In the 1970s and 1980s, a series of reports from the IRC was published in the Rosicrucian Digest under the title “Mindquest.” This podcast of an article from that series was written by George Buletza, PhD, FRC, Director of the IRC at that time.

AMORC’s IRC is still very active in scientific investigations around the world today. Some of the researchers’ findings are published as books, others as papers in the Rose+Croix Journal (www.rosecroixjournal.org), and others as presentations – in person and online.

The Rosicrucian Chant is presented to every AMORC student at the beginning of the studies — to be sung, hummed, played either internally in the heart/mind or even externally in physicality if circumstances allow, when the member is in the home Sanctum, in Convocation, or wherever the need or desire arises. However, not everyone manifests musicianship and if one does, the opportunity to sing or play is sometimes elusive. An alternative is to play a recording. However, in the new world of digital music, a contemporary recording of The Rosicrucian Chant is difficult to find, as I’m sure some of you already know. I actually recorded a version of The Rosicrucian Chant in the 1980’s that perhaps some of you may have encountered in your association with AMORC, but as music recording technologies and artistic sensibilities have changed, it occurred to me that it was time for another expression of this most heartfelt music. This was the motivation for the recording of several intuitive variations of this eternal song, used not just for simple entertainment but more importantly, as a tool for resonating, communing and communicating with the Inner Self and the energies of Celestial Sanctum. The first version is the traditional interpretation of The Rosicrucian Chant, taken directly from the sheet music itself. The three variations that follow are recordings of intuitive performances, played from the heart from a spiritual perspective — with regard for metronomic exactitude and musical structures held only in secondary — or even tertiary — importance. With today’s technology, these recordings can be played separately, linked together or looped separately or together, in any order that you wish – whatever you need to facilitate going to the spiritual place you want or need to be. Please understand that this music is Rosicrucian in origin – inspired, composed, played, recorded and presented by members of AMORC, which holds all international copyrights. In the early twentieth century Roman crews were excavating for a new railway station when they came across a small vaulted basilica, about fifty feet underground. Notwithstanding its diminutive size (thirty by thirty-six feet), the find was extraordinary. Built sometime between the first century BCE and the first century CE, its walls are adorned with stucco bas-reliefs depicting mythological and mystery school themes, including those connected with the Neopythagoreans. It appears to have been a meeting place and perhaps an initiatory chamber for these Mysteries. The musician draws the bow across the violin string and immediately the inert atmosphere becomes vibrant and transparent, “…as if sound from nonspatial realms shines through a window into the world of space.” What is being demonstrated is a phenomenon known as the overtone series, in which any tone, played or sung, activates a column of mathematically-related notes which vibrate sympathetically with the sounded pitch and create resonance. Octaves throughout the universe respond, in a modern, scientific “music of the spheres,” echoing the hypothesis that dates back to ancient times and the School of Pythagoras.

Ancient Greek legend has it that in the sixth century BCE, there were seven sages in Greece who served the God Apollo. According to the ancient tales, at least three of their best-known sayings were inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, together with the enigmatic and still unexplained great letter E. Several other cultures, including India and China, also had stories of seven mythic sages, suggesting a universal and archetypal quality to these philosophers and their sayings. This podcast offers examples of wisdom from these sages, and an opportunity to meditate on each.

Dr. Jasmine Day was born in 1972 in Perth, Australia, and received her PhD in Cultural Anthropology from The University of Western Australia in 2002. A book based on her thesis, The Mummy’s Curse: Mummymania in the English-speaking World, was published by Routledge in August 2006. She combines a general knowledge of Egyptology (especially funerary customs and mummification) with an anthropological perspective on both the culture of ancient Egypt and modern cultures’ understandings of ancient Egypt (i.e. Egyptomania). She specializes in the study of Mummymania, the Western fascination with, and representations of, Egyptian mummies. She visited the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum on July 31, 2007, and we were fortunate enough to have some time for a conversation on her favorite subjects!
